In such a case, she said, "it's not like you need to give him a lot of information, but you convey to him that you're interested. Work to create communities that can deal with sexual issues together. Levin was once contacted by a mother upset about a birthday party that her grade-school daughter had attended. The girls' school now sends a letter to parents at the beginning of each school year about appropriate birthday parties, a move that Levin applauds as providing an opening for discussion.

    The challenge parents face, Levin said, is that "kids are developing in two compartments in their head -- there's all the things that they need to learn to be fulfilled, productive members of society, and then there's all the messages popular culture is giving them, which kind of go against everything we want them to learn.
